Ferry Bridge
A bespoke suspended-access design supporting concrete and bearing repairs beneath the A354 bridge connecting Weymouth and Portland.
Ferry Bridge carries the A354 between Weymouth and the Isle of Portland, forming the only road connection between Portland and the mainland. The present bridge was built in 1985 and crosses the channel where the Fleet lagoon meets Portland Harbour, creating a particularly exposed and environmentally sensitive setting for repair work.
Following the identification of cracked concrete and worn structural bearings, Dorset Council began a programme of essential repairs to protect the bridge and extend its serviceable life. The work included concrete repairs to the underside of the structure alongside the replacement of deteriorated bearings.
Pyramid Scaffold Design was appointed to produce the detailed scaffold drawings for the specialist access solution. The design needed to provide safe working access beneath the bridge while overcoming the challenges created by the tidal water, restricted ground support and sensitive surrounding environment. Much of the resulting scaffold was therefore suspended directly from the bridge rather than founded within the water below.
Working alongside IE Access, who supplied and erected the scaffold for specialist bridge contractor VSL UK, Pyramid developed a bespoke hanging arrangement that gave repair teams secure access to the soffit, piers and bearing locations. The scheme required careful consideration of loading, suspension points and construction sequencing so the scaffold could be erected safely while the bridge and surrounding area remained operational.
Environmental protection was also central to the project. By limiting scaffold contact with the water and using clean, newly purchased fittings, the delivery team reduced the risk of contaminants entering the Fleet and Portland Harbour. The completed solution demonstrates how close coordination between scaffold designers, access contractors and structural repair specialists can unlock safe access to complex infrastructure in demanding locations.
